Driving wheels are a great option for gamers who want a more realistic driving experience when playing racing games. A typical basic sim racing setup consists of a driving wheel for steering and foot pedals for throttle/braking. However, some racers may have difficulty physically accessing the foot pedals, making a typical sim racing setup inaccessible. For these individuals, hand controls can be a great alternative that will allow them to access the throttle/brake with their hands rather than their feet. There are a few different options that allow hand controls to be used for throttle/braking. First, there are a handful of racing wheels on the market that have integrated analog paddles that can be remapped to throttle/brake controls. This is a more reliable option but can be expensive as the setup requires purchasing a more expensive wheel and a separate a wheel base. There are companies that also sell paddles that can be added onto the back of existing (typically higher end) steering wheels, though this is also expensive. A cheaper option is using an external hand controller like the one from 3DRap alongside an affordable introductory racing wheel. This might not have as intuitive or robust of a feel compared to the wheels with built-in analog paddles but is a much more affordable option. One important note is that most of the current accessible options for sim racing will work only on PC and not for console gaming. Please see the video for an overview of accessible sim racing options and the 3DRap hand control.
